Men's Health: Testosterone Deficiency

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and is responsible for promoting bone mass, increased muscle mass and the growth of body hair. Testosterone plays other key roles in the body like regulated sex drive (libido), proper fat distribution, and the production of red blood cells.

The symptoms of low Testosterone

The symptoms of lower than optimal levels of testosterone can vary from decreased energy and low mood (depression) to decreased sex drive and obesity. Other symptoms include:

· Lack or loss of body hair

· Lack and or loss of lean muscle mass

· Irritability and anxiety

· Erectile dysfunction

· Increased belly fat

· Bone loss

Men ages 30 – 70 years of age will typically lose 1-3% of their testosterone every year. Lower than optimal levels can occur in men as early as 30 years of age. Nearly 65% of men over the age of 65, almost 40% of men over the age of 45 and ¼ of men over the age of 30 have low levels of testosterone. Low testosterone is diagnosed by a simple lab test.

Testosterone HRT

HRT or hormone replacement therapy is used when low or suboptimal levels of hormones are discovered on a lab test. The most typical kind of HRT for testosterone is weekly injections. Benefits of HRT include:

· Reduced brain fog

· Increased energy

· Enhanced sleep

· Feeling of overall wellbeing

· Improved cognition

· Reduced anxiety and depression

· Increase in lean body weight (muscle mass)

· Stronger bones and muscles

· Reduced body fat

· Protection of the prostrate

· Improved sexual pleasure and libido

Restoring testosterone levels to an optimal level can have a positive impact on physical, mental and sexual health.
