Testosterone: Not Just a Male Hormone

Did you know that testosterone is just as important in females as in males. Throughout a woman’s life Testosterone is the body’s most abundant active hormone. In fact, women make more testosterone daily than they do estrogen. Why? Testosterone plays a huge role in the health and optimal function of almost every organ and system in the body.

In this study they found that testosterone was the most important hormone for women no matter what age or stage of life they are in.

What does low T look like in women?

Women tend to lose half of their testosterone production by the age of 40. Complications of low T in women range from memory and neurological issues to higher risk for fractures and heart attacks. The main complications are listed below:

  1. Increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease

  2. Increased risk for cardiovascular disease (the number one killer of women in the US)

  3. Increased risk for osteoporosis-related fractures

  4. Increased risk for diabetes

  5. Possible increased risk for breast cancer.

Although testosterone levels naturally decline with age, symptoms of low T can occur as early as late 20’s and early 30’s. These include:

  1. Diminished sense of overall wellbeing

  2. Low mood (sadness, depression, anxiety, and irritability)

  3. Fatigue

  4. Decreased libido

  5. Hot flashes

  6. Bone loss

  7. Memory loss

  8. Decreased muscle mass

  9. Insomnia

  10. Incontinence and sexual problems

Treatment for low T in Women

Testosterone replacement therapy for women include either injections or pellets inserted under the skin. Testosterone replacement is not just for menopausal women. TRT has been used in women pre menopause and causes no changes to menstrual cycles. Its even been shown to be effective for post-partum depression and fatigue. To learn more about womens HRT click here.

Since testosterone plays such a major role in many different body systems and functions its easy to see why a deficiency could cause debilitating symptoms and issues for women from all walks of life.
