Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) For Weight Loss

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide, commonly known as Ozempic and Wegovy, is an injectable medication that belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 RA’s. Semaglutide acts like the GLP-1 hormone that is released by the gut when you eat. GLP-1 causes the body to produce more insulin, which in turn lowers blood sugar (glucose) levels. This is why Semaglutide has been used for over 15 years in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Semaglutide and Weight Loss

Along with reducing blood sugar levels, Semaglutide interacts with the area of the brain responsible for suppressing appetite and the feeling of fullness. It also slows the passage of food through the digestive tract thus further decreasing appetite. Combining semaglutide with a healthy diet and lifestyle can offer significant weight loss.

Is it Effective?

The studies say yes! A study was done of 2,000 overweight adults that compared people using diet, exercise and semaglutide to a group who only incorporated diet and an exercise regimen. After 68 weeks, half of the participants using semaglutide lost 15% of their body weight and almost one third of the group lost 20 percent! Compared to 2.4% of body weight lost for the group that solely used diet and exercise.

Is Semaglutide a Right Fit for You?

A good candidate for semaglutide is someone with a higher-than-normal BMI with or without weight related health complications like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Maintaining a healthy weight significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Semaglutide is a once weekly injection using a very small needle. The use of semaglutide is not indicated for individuals who have or have had medullary thyroid cancer, gallbladder disease and or pancreatitis. Some side effects do include nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, and headache. These symptoms can be managed by slowly increasing the dose of semaglutide.
